A beautifully balanced collaboration. Joseph Cheaney made boots and shoes using our Herdwyck No.10 tweed. We produced a collection of bags in the same materials. Cherchbi produced a bag and accessory range for the Hardy Amies Autumn Winter '13 runway show. Based on an imagined meeting of British royal grandeur and the restraint of the Bauhaus school of design, the collection combines traditional tailoring craftsmanship with a modern aesthetic. An excerpt from the show notes, '...a striking holdall, a highlight piece in the brand’s collaboration with English leather goods company Cherchbi. Their modernist design approach to British heritage craftsmanship relates seamlessly with the collection. The capsule range includes hand-made holdalls, rucksacks and iPad cases incorporating the ‘Bauhaus check’ wool with Cherchbi’s characteristic vegetable tanned English saddle leather.'

For the 2012 London Design Festival we were invited to work with likeminded cycling brand Quarterre. The project City Style on Two Wheels featured Quarterre’s Hood and Branchline bike stands reinterpreted in Herdwyck No.10 tweed and our saddle leather whilst we launched our Cadence cycling satchel.

Despite our origins being two centuries apart, Cherchbi and John Smedley are united in our passion for Britain’s manufacturing heritage. In 2012 we blended our attributes, unique skills and mutual respect into a collaborative collection.
We were granted permission to delve into the John Smedley archive, exploring an era when the company’s fine knitwear was marked with ink stamps rather than sewn-in labels. Of the hundreds of stamp designs the ‘J. Smedley Lea Derbyshire’ design was selected. This carved wooden example from the mid 19th century is one of the earliest in the archive, even predating the first John Smedley patents.
The collaborative collection features three Cherchbi bags; the Blake Overnight Bag, Barrett Flap Brief and iPad Sleeve, each produced in a strictly limited run of 10 pieces. All were externally embossed with both brand names with the 'J. Smedley Lea Derbyshire' hand-stamped in blue ink inside each bag, echoing the garment labelling procedure employed by John Smedley a century ago. An edition number, from 1/10 to 10/10, was hand-embossed into the leather trim of each bag.

Tamasyn Gambell has designed print for Louis Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent. With her eponymous brand she creates luxurious, considered designs using environmentally and socially responsible methods. When Tamasyn approached us suggesting a collaboration, the idea of printing onto Herdwyck No.10 tweed immediately connected our appreciation of graphic pattern and Herdwick sheep smit-marks.
